THE SKY IN FRONT OF ME

Originally planned as the counterpart EP to Antihero, we decided to take more time to write a proper album. If Antihero was about embracing the darkness, The Sky In Front of Me is about the light.

The light may be ahead, but that means that you are still in the darkness, and this album still deals with some heavy themes. "Barely" is a song about a failing relationship where your partner is looking to you for support, but you're too caught up in your own issues to be available for them.

The first track, "Sugarcoat," is my favorite song on this album. It's the sound I've been striving to reach since I was a kid plucking the strings in a garage. The song is about a friend of mine who is one of the most fun-loving people I know. She shines positivity, but I know her well and the pain she hides.

ANTIHERO

Antihero was originally planned to be the first half of a two EP release, one being the "light" and the other the "dark" with songs from Antihero carrying a softer tone musically yet heavy tone lyrically. The counterpart

turned into a full length album which is The Sky in Front of Me and has its own balance of light and dark.

At the time of writing Antihero I was preparing to deploy and doing things like drafting a will, so I was in a mindset of making peace with my mortality and that came out in the song "Ashes".

The song was written on a Mandocello, which is a strange instrument I came across in an antique store. This guitar looks like an acoustic bass with doubled strings similar to a 12-string guitar. "Ashes" is the one and only song I’ve written with that guitar because playing it is murder on the fingers.

"Down" was written years ago in 2008 and the lyrics are reflective of where I was at in life at that time; the chips were, well…down.

The story behind the song "Antihero" is interesting. Some friends and I decided to go to the local go-kart track dressed as Mario characters and I managed to put together a pretty sweet Wario costume. I came to embrace his character and really feel the theme of an antihero fits my personality. That’s how this song was birthed.
